Implementation Department Ⅲ of Foreign Aid Training     April 1, 2026

Background: Mr. James Tamba FOMBA, Advisor of the International Affairs and Diplomacy of the First Lady’s Office of Sierra Leone, wrote an article entitled “China in My Eyes” after participating in the Seminar on Implementation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for Developing Countries -- Women and Children, organized by the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China in March 2026.

My travel to China kept me excited when I got the news that I had been chosen by my office to travel to China. It brought mixed feelings of what I am going to see and experience in such a diverse country…One real thought before I entered in China was that it is a developed country with huge strength in manufacturing and IT capabilities.

China in my eyes represents a vibrant fusion of historical customs and contemporary technological power. It is a region characterized by balance, highlighted by the contrast between ancient landmarks such as the Great Wall and the rapid advancement of technology, featuring a cashless society and modern infrastructure. The energy and cohesion of its population propel China’s ascent as a global force in innovation, sustainability, and economic strength. This continuous change showcases the resilience embedded in profound cultural principles, highlighting unity and a dedication to sharing advancements globally. In general, China showcases itself as a strong force, combining its deep-rooted history with a swiftly changing future.

China in my eyes is marked by the energy and solidarity of its populace, as seen in cities like Beijing and Nanjing, showcasing a shared determination that has established the country as a worldwide leader in innovation and infrastructure. Evolving from its agricultural origins to a global superpower in a single generation.

China in my eyes harmonizes age-old tradition with contemporary innovation, demonstrating resilience. Its enduring principles of family and hospitality persist while embracing a digital revolution, incorporating technology smoothly into everyday life, such as mobile payments, infrastructure and high-speed rail services. The country champions a vision of collective progress, inviting the world to observe its evolution, highlighted by the historical importance of the Great Wall as a symbol of strength and engineering success.

China in my eyes is also defined by power and cohesion, with its rich history providing a basis for motivation and development.

China in my eyes I saw resilience in the minds of the people, I saw discipline, determination and hard-work.

My journey from Sierra Leone to China revealed a country profoundly steeped in cultural heritage, representing strength and engineering skill, highlighting China’s lasting heritage and its ability to advance beyond human imagination. My initial thoughts didn’t sway me from the facts of China’s development for its people and the world at large. I experienced and saw more than I initially thought. The Great Wall which represents a symbol of cultural pride rather than a wall of separation. In my eyes, it represents the essence of the Chinese people and their ability for future planning and collaboration. Its recognition as an UNESCO world heritage site is well-deserved in the eyes of the world.

In conclusion, China in my eyes is a remarkable blend of culture, infrastructure, technology and innovation. The world has much to learn from these tremendous achievements of the Chinese people.
